City descritpion

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg has kept its historic character despite severe damage inflicted over the past centuries. The skyline features an extraordinary backdrop of church spires and architectural landmarks. In addition, Hamburg has a vast number of museums and entertainment venues and recently became famous for its musicals.

St. Michaelis
The protestant church St. Michaelis, called Michel by the locals, is the landmark of Hamburg and one of the most important baroque churches of Northern Germany. It is dedicated to the archangel Michael who is honoured by a large bronze statue standing above the portal of the church. As the church is visible from far away, it is a mark of orientation for navigators.

Hamburger Fischmarkt
Each Sunday between 5 a.m. (7 a.m. during the winter) and 9.30 a.m., the street Grosse Elbstrasse in the quarter of Altona turns into a fish market where merchants and barkers offer their goods. Although the market is a major tourist attraction, the priority is to sell fish so that the market offers a genuine insight into the life of the domestic merchants.

Reeperbahn
The Reeperbahn (ropewalk) is the center of nightlife in the quarter of St. Pauli and owes its name to the people who once used the street for making ropes. Today, the street is famous for its entertainment venues. In addition to numerous night clubs, bars and discos, the St. Pauli Theater, Schmidts Tivoli and the waxworks Panoptikum propose great amusement. The infamous red-light district of Herbertstrasse runs parallel to the Reeperbahn and only adults are allowed to enter this street.
